If you see a spider in or around your home or property, it’s important to be able to identify whether it’s harmless or venomous, because while all spiders can give you the creeps, a bite from a venomous spider can lead to medical issues.
St. Louis venomous spiders
The most common venomous spider in St.Louis is the Brown Recluse
Brown Recluse Spiders
Don’t be fooled by the name, brown recluse spiders are usually, but not always, brown. Colorwise, most of these spiders fall somewhere on a spectrum from light to medium brown, but they can also be off-white, dark brown, or an almost-black shade of gray.
Brown recluse spiders usually have a distinctive marking that helps people identify them: they typically have a dark brown violin shaped mark on the dorsal (upward facing) side of the cephalothorax; it looks like the neck of the violin is pointing backward toward the abdomen. But, the most reliable way of identifying a spider as a brown recluse is to count the eyes— they have six eyes whereas most spiders have eight.
Unlike the beloved barn spider in the children’s classic, Charlotte’s Web, brown recluse spiders don’t weave symmetrical webs (with or without inspiring messages) up in the corners of doorways or rooms. While the “brown” part of their name is not always accurate, they are indeed reclusive. They like to stay hidden in the asymmetrical webs they spin. These webs often look tangled or trampled— perhaps because they function as more of a home base than as a clever way of trapping food— brown recluse spiders are active hunters so they don’t need their webs to trap their prey.
When indoors, they’re fond of cardboard, and like to lurk in dry, and relatively undisturbed places like closets. If your property has outdoor space, you might find them in wood piles or outbuildings like garages and sheds.
While these spiders are definitely scarier than Halloween decorations due to their venomous bites, they are also smaller than your average spooky prop, usually measuring somewhere between 6 and 20 millimeters. That’s pretty small, and considering the range in color variation, it may be difficult for the untrained eye to confidently conclude whether the spider in question is a brown recluse or a less dangerous species— especially if you prefer not to get too close! If you have any doubts as to what species you’re dealing with, call Pure Pest. Our trained technicians know how to distinguish between pests that are dangerous and pests that are annoying.
